The forgotten lumbar puncture

With the advent of neuroimaging exams, in special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), many physicians started to considering the lumbar puncture as an ancient, invasive and even forgotten procedure. But we must remember that this procedure is crucial in the diagnosis of some conditions as intracranial hypertension, intracranial hypotension, meningeal carcinomatosis, encephalitis, different types of meningitis and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Thus, this subject has the objective to inform about the crucial importance of the lumbar puncture in the diagnosis of some types of secondary headache, in spite of being modern and sophisticated neuroimaging procedures.
